The second batch of Purpleheart Reamers has sold out. I will be making more, but I don’t know the timing yet. My best estimate is by mid to late November.
New for fall of 2025, I’m offering reamers in incredibly dense purpleheart. This is a significant upgrade in density and rigidity from the standard reamers that I make in hard maple. Supply is incredibly limited.
This is a large scale six degree reamer intended for creating the tapered mortises that are one of the foundations of Windsor chair joinery. The reamer is used to transform a cylindrical hole into a tapered mortise. The combination of a reamed mortise and a matching tapered tenon form a joint that mechanically locks together and is simple and efficient to produce.
These reamers are made made of purpleheart with a 6 degree taper and have a working range in holes from 1/2 inch to 1-1/4 inches in diameter. The total length of the tool is about 15 inches and the working length (the portion with the blade) is a little over 9 inches. The handle is reamed into the main body of the tool and can be tapped free for storage or transport. There is also an adjuster screw that presses against the back of the blade to adjust the depth of cut.
International shipping will be added after purchase. I can ship to most countries for $60.
